What is Cottagecore?

The Vibe

If you’re a maker who has used the internet in the last 3 years, you’ve seen Cottagecore. Even if you haven’t heard the word Cottagecore before, the aesthetic codes will be instantly recognizable to you.

Cottagecore is a niche aesthetic that fetishizes nature, femininity, and a bucolic country life. Some iterations also incorporate aspects of fantasy and magic. Think of lush, rolling hills covered in flowers; gentle morning light streaming in through a cabin window onto a rustic wood table with a basket full of fresh eggs and wildflowers; blurry photos of girls in diaphanous dresses and flower crowns, laughing as they forage for mushrooms. Maybe the person is actually dressed like an incredibly cute anthropomorphized mushroom. That is also Cottagecore.

The Look

Off the shoulder milkmaid dresses, dirndl skirts, gathered necklines, puffy sleeves, aprons, corset/stays style tops, and head kerchiefs. Shawls styled over the shoulders, cardigans are worked in classic stitches and cables. Yarns can range from rustic wool in natural colors to fuzzy mohair and alpaca blends with ethereal halos. Fabric patterns feature gingham, florals (especially micro florals), and large border prints. Embroidered floral embellishments, crocheted lace trim details complete the look.

The Materials

Natural fibers and colors are a great place to start. Light cottons and linens for casual pieces. Yarns can range from rustic wool in natural colors to fuzzy mohair and alpaca blends with ethereal halos. Fabric patterns feature gingham, florals (especially micro florals), and large border prints. Embroidered floral embellishments, crocheted lace trim details complete the look. Don’t be afraid to add in some tulle for volume, or glittery embellishments. Remember The Strawberry Dress? That’s peak cottagecore.
